The Missa de Sancto Donatiano was composed by Jacob Obrecht, commissioned by the widow of Donaes de Noor, Adriane Vos. Her image appears on the cover of this album, which in turn is part of the triptych The Lamentation (c. 1475). The mass was first sung in 1487, at St Jacob's Church in Bruges.
This album contains not only an audio recording of the Missa - performed by Capella Pratensis - but also a reconstruction of the mass and an extensive documentary on its creation. The documentary was filmed on location, and is commented on by Jennifer Bloxam, music professor at Williams College in Massachusetts, and Stratton Bull, artistic director of Cappella Pratensis. The album even has a website, where additional information can be found including historical backgrounds and the complete score, sometimes even with the original manuscripts. Jacob Obrecht was a Flemish composer and is mostly praised for his church music - his many masses, especially from the late 15th century, and motets - and for his songs. Obrecht lived and worked in both The Netherlands and Italy.Detailed description of
