For many years Cappella Pratensis has been providing an advanced summer course together with Musica and AMUZ. As a result of the pandemic, 2020 became the first online edition, and with success! This year we are continuing this with TWO online courses: one for beginners and one for advanced! Choose the course that suits you best and sign up!
Josquin and the Art of Polyphony
For professional, pre-professional singers and advanced amateurs
What is polyphony and how did it develop? How do you best approach it as a performer in the modern day? What challenges and advantages does performing it from the original notation bring? What are the basics of improvising polyphony? These are just some of the questions that will be tackled in the 2021 edition of the annual Summerschool given by vocal ensemble Cappella Pratensis.
Central to this exploration will be the music of Josquin des Prez, who we commemorate this year on the 500th anniversary of his death. In multiple in-depth sessions we explore the repertoire of Josquin and his contemporaries, complemented by lessons in the subtleties of mensural notation given by specialist Valerie Horst. The course will be taught in English.
Following the successful online Summerschool in 2020, we will once again host the Summerschool 2021 online. Teachers Andrew Hallock, Pieter De Moor and Stratton Bull will lead the sessions and are joined by two other singers from Cappella Pratensis. This is your chance to sing together with a specialized professional ensemble! There will also be Q&A sessions with the teachers, and together with the other participants we will create a virtual performance of a selection of the repertoire. In addition to the live lessons, short webinars will illustrate various aspects of the Art of Polyphony.
