INFORMATION Vivat Leo! Music for a Medici Pope For the brand new recording "Vivat Leo! Music for a Medici Pope", Cappella Pratensis has joined forces with the renowned international conductor and musicologist Joshua Rifkin in an exploration of the musical tastes of the infamous Pope Leo X, who reigned from 1513 to 1518. The repertoire includes works by the established masters of Leo's day, Josquin Desprez and Jean Mouton, but also shows the pope's appreciation for the new generation of composers, including Adrian Willaert and Constanzo Festa. From the opening work, Gaude felix Florentie - written for the new pope's triumphant entry into his hometown of Florence - to Josquin's monumental Miserere mei, Deus, the repertoire is colourful and dramatic, painting a vivid picture of Italian musical life at the height of the Renaissance. Rifkin's long association with this repertoire ensures a vibrant and thoughtful performance.

INFORMATION
Pierre de la Rue Requiem
Pierre de la Rue may be considered the “composer of consolation”. In his many years of service for the Governess of the Low Countries, Margaret of Austria, he produced masses, motets and chansons with a sweet melancholy that apparently soothed the troubled heart of his patroness, who had suffered great misfortune in her life. In La Rue’s sonorous setting of the Requiem Mass, the composer reaches a refined highpoint in this art of consolation, in one of the first polyphonic versions of the Mass for the Dead in the history of Western music.
The program is rounded off by the monumental motet Miserere mei Deus by Josquin des Prez. This psalm was frequently sung at the end of Requiem masses in the Renaissance, often at the grave of the deceased. Josquin's setting of this text represents his longest and most passionate motet composition, a work that even in his own time was compared with the art of Michelangelo.
